Clutch won't dissengage1996 Mitsubishi Lancer

Went to change from 3rd to 4th but it did not want to go into 4th. When the engine is running I cannot change into any gear (causes grinding). Kick started the car in gear and it ran fine except for not being able to change gears. I suspect it is a clutch problem. Every cable and leaver running to the clutch works. Any ideas or solutions would be great.
