Engine check sign appearing on Dash Board2000 Toyota Mark II

I bought Toyota Mark 11 in May 2016 this year and it has been running well. Suddenly, its been one month now when the Engine check sign begins popping on the dash board. This normally occurs when am in the jam and the car is in slow motion. Each time the engine check sign pops up, the steering wheel gets so hard, the car runs out of power and it stalls suddenly. So I have to restart the engine in order for the car to re- start. This used to happen once in a while but the frequency of this occurrence is increasing and I find it so so strange. This vehicle is of VVTI Engine.
